What Causes Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is the leading adult dental health concern. More than three-quarters of adults are affected by gum disease, which is mostly caused by plaque build-up. Other contributing factors to gum disease may include teeth grinding, TMJ dysfunction, tobacco use, uncontrolled diabetes, hormonal changes (as in pregnancy or menopause), and poor nutrition.

Common symptoms or signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen or sore gums
  • Bleeding when brushing, flossing or eating
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus between gums and teeth
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Changes in the fit of dentures, mouth guards or other oral appliances

Gum Disease Treatment

Of course, the best way to treat gum disease is prevention. If you do show signs of gingivitis or gum disease, Dr. Wallach may recommend deep teeth cleaning known as scaling and root planning. During this procedure, the dentist will remove plaque and tartar from the deep pockets of the gum. Patients who have advanced signs of gum disease may require more intense treatment or surgery.
